About the Event
Sunlight and Shadow opens the 2026–27 ClassiCulture season. The program begins in Costa Rica with Manuel Matarrita's SoLatina, by a composer Andrade knows well: he returned to the Costa Rican National Symphony to give the world premiere of Matarrita's Piano Concerto. From there, Bach's Toccata in C minor, full of abrupt turns and argument, then Ravel's Sonatine, three movements of clarity and restraint.
After the interval, Chopin: a nocturne, a mazurka, and the Third Scherzo. The recital closes where its title comes from, with Mompou's four preludes, quiet and unhurried, and Granados's El Pelele, a Madrid street scene that ends the night in daylight.

About the Artist
Costa Rican pianist Dr. Juan Pablo Andrade maintains a very active career as a performer and pedagogue. He is a recipient of the Costa Rican National Prize of Music, awarded by the Costa Rican Ministry of Culture, along with First Prize at the Artlivre International Piano Competition in São Paulo and First Prize in the Carlos Enrique Vargas National Piano Competition in Costa Rica.
As a soloist he has performed with the Valley Symphony, the South Bend Symphony, the Greensboro Symphony, the Powder River Symphony, the Bolivian National Symphony, and on many occasions with the Costa Rican National Symphony. As a recitalist he has appeared throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America. His duo recording War to Peace on Centaur Records, made with violinist Betul Soykan, was reviewed favorably in Fanfare magazine.
Dr. Andrade is Professor of Piano at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and founder and artistic director of the La Frontera International Piano Conference in Brownsville. He holds degrees from the University of Costa Rica, Arizona State University, Indiana University South Bend, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His mentors include Gerardo Duarte, Robert Hamilton, Alexander Toradze, and John Salmon.
