Inner Landscapes

Qize (Louis) Liu invites audiences into an evening of contrasting musical landscapes, moving from the introspective world of Schubert to the psychological intensity of Scriabin and, finally, to the vivid colors and rhythms of Latin America.

Schubert opens the evening with striking contrasts between restraint, lyricism, and quiet emotional tension. Scriabin deepens it, tracing an intensely personal world of longing, conflict, and transformation. The program concludes with two intimate works from Latin America, by Manuel M. Ponce and Teresa Carreño, whose warmth and rhythmic character reveal the rich variety of piano traditions beyond the European canon.

About the Artist

Pianist Qize (Louis) Liu is an active soloist, collaborative artist, and pedagogue. He has performed across the United States and abroad, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, the Tempe Center for the Arts, and festival venues in Spain and Poland. A champion of underrepresented repertoire, his recent performance and research projects focus on historical women composers, including lecture-recitals devoted to the piano works of Venezuelan composer Teresa Carreño.

A prizewinner in numerous international and national competitions, Liu received the Young Alumnus Merit Award from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He is also an accomplished classical recording engineer, with credits including high-fidelity concert recordings for Martha Argerich.

Liu earned his Bachelor of Music summa cum laude from UTRGV and his Master of Music from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at Arizona State University, studying with Baruch Meir, where he teaches applied piano, group keyboard skills, and chamber music.
